related portals: Children's literature.; sister projects: Wikipedia article.; One of Mr. Kipling's greatest delights is to set the critics bickering. In "Stalky & Co." he has succeeded admirably in doing this, and is doubtless now chuckling over the fun, even as his Stalky might have chuckled over the discomfiture and puzzlement of his masters used to boys as classes rather than individuals.   If Kipling’s book is an account of the importance of good naughties to the progression of boys growing into men, why, then, do I hesitate to recommend Stalky and Co. to adolescents? It is not the case that boys should not read about and engage in such naughties—though often, in a position similar to the hapless headmasters, I have found occasion to speak and act against those naughties.
