Nature bears long with those who wrong her. She is patient under abuse. But when abuse has gone too far, when the time of reckoning finally comes, she is equally slow to be appeased and to turn away her wrath. I learned this from a book called 'Maudslay & the Pioneers of the Machine Age' by J Cantrell & G Cookson.

The book also includes an engraving of the lathe in Rivett's photos. There's also a photo of a fine-looking Maudslay lathe in the Henry Ford Museum.
